This six week course covers the basics of how to become a midwife, the types of midwives and educational routes to midwifery, scope of practice, history, legalities, and social, political and ethical considerations. This course is offered over six consecutive Thursdays, starting September 1st from 6-9 pm. This course does not cover any clinical content.
Week 1 What is a Midwife? -Roles, responsibilities, types of midwives and practice settings
Week 2 History of Midwifery – From 1600s to the present
Week 3 The Midwifery Model vs The Medical Model (a comparison and implications for health outcomes)
Week 4 Legislation, Regulation, Education and Globalization – implications for practice and the future of midwifery
Week 5 Perinatal Health Inequities and the Role of the Midwife
Week 6 Midwifery Panel of CNMs and CPMs, Exam and Evaluation
Participants will recieve 18 hours of continuing education credits. This course does not have an online option: in person only. Students have the option of participating in a Morningstar Retreat on at Osage Beach MO. The cost for the retreat is $100 (meals included)
